Dr. Jorge I. Dominguez - Harvard Professor Focused on Latin America

A former professor at Harvard University, Dr. Jorge I. Dominguez served as chairperson of the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies and was Antonio Madero Professor for the Study of Mexico until his retirement. Originally from Havana, Dr. Jorge I. Dominguez left Cuba with his family at age 15 in 1960 and sought to forge a new life in the United States.

Earning a BA as a Scholar of the House in history at Yale University summa cum laude, Mr. Dominguez subsequently completed his PhD in political science at Harvard. He was the latter institution’s first Vice Provost for International Affairs, within the Office of the Provost, and promoted and supported a diversity of work focused on international topics. He also helped guide existing Harvard activities abroad and worked to establish new overseas programs. His fundraising efforts, in collaboration with others, enabled the raising of gifts totaling $100 million that went to establishing professorships and funding a number of research programs and student fellowships. He also chaired a number of LLCs in Botswana and Tanzania on behalf of Harvard that focused on addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis.

An established writer and publisher, Dr. Jorge I. Dominguez is editor and chapter author of works such as Essays on Mexico, Central and South America: Scholarly Debates from the 1950s to the 1990s (Garland Publishing). He also wrote Insurrection or Loyalty: The Breakdown of the Spanish American Empire (Harvard University Press), which has been translated into Spanish.
